Mission Statement
Citizens for Responsible Development support re-development in Downtown Kirkland according to the Comprehensive Plan for Kirkland. We believe that the future re-development must take into account the distinctive topography of our downtown, respect its hometown setting, and retain its human-scale and pedestrian orientation.
Working to Preserve Kirkland
The citizens and city officials of Kirkland have worked for years creating guidelines for building heights, set-backs, parking requirements and more to ensure our city remains beautiful and pedestrian friendly. But the Parkplace rezoning requests threaten this planning. Citizens for Responsible Development is a grass roots group encouraging a mixed use Parkplace plan that is more in line with city codes--codes which allow for significant economic development.
Proposed Parkplace will Change the City
The proposed Kirkland Parkplace redevelopment project is 1.8 million square feet including 1.2 million square feet of office space, 300,000 square feet of retail space, a health club, theatre and a hotel. The majority of the buildings proposed will be eight stories tall.
The developer has made many promises about what kinds of stores we will see, but these are empty promises unless the city requires there to be a hardware store, theatre, meeting space, or a place to buy socks. We need to be cautious about falling victim to promises with nothing to back them up.
